Teaching an Off Camera Flash Class at Rayko Photo Center on Saturday

One of the most useful tools to take your photography and creativity to the next level is learning how to use your external flash unit off the hotshoe. In this class you will learn the fun and easy way to create dynamic environmental portraits without the use of complicated equipment. You will be taught how to execute fill, creative and dramatic flash. Class will begin with a visual lecture to review the key rules of flash. Our afternoon will be spent in the field photographing assignments based on topics discussed during morning session. The instructor will accompany the group to provide hands-on support and advice. You will round out the day reviewing and critiquing your photo assignments. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather, eat a big breakfast and to bring a snack since lunch will be late in the day. Don’t forget, the entire day we will spend using our flashes off camera by triggering them remotely.

Christine Zona was the first staff photographer for the Discovery Channel in Silver Spring, Maryland. She worked there for 4 years until she elected to pursue freelance photography in the artistic city of San Francisco. Along with being a full time professional photographer she teaches off camera flash classes and is part-time photo editor for the SyFy Channel. For 4 years she studied under National Geographic Photographer, Raul Touzon, and was a producer for his instructional photography workshops. These workshops range from brief weekend flash sessions to intensive week long on-location documentary workshops. In the SF Chronicle’s 2010 Best of the BayList, Christine won third place for Best Portrait Photography. Her work has been featured in three solo shows, two group shows and was exhibited in six international juried competitions. She also is the founder of the San Francisco Toy Camera Meetup Group and is an active member of the analogue photography community.

Zona Foto’s Hurricane Sandy Fundraising Photo Show at Photobooth SF

As you all know back in November I put my entire Jersey Shore Polaroid series up for sale to help raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.I sold roughly 400 prints and photo products to raise about $1,200 for charity. The original polaroids will be up on display at Photobooth SF during the month of March. I will have prints and photo products for sale to help raise money for Waves for Water’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Initiative.

W4W has been addressing the initial survival needs on many levels from first responder assistance to rubble removal and ultimately the rebuilding efforts. They have extensive experience with disaster relief that puts them in a unique position to help organize, mobilize and deploy a strategic response initiative for the victims of Sandy.
